Waking up with a dry throat. Skin that feels tight by the middle of winter. Houseplants browning at the edges however often you water them. Central heating dries the air in a UK home far more than people realise, and a humidifier puts some of that moisture back.

One thing to be sure of before buying: this is the right appliance only if your air is genuinely dry. If your windows run with condensation or you have damp or mould anywhere in the house, a humidifier will make it worse, and what you need is a dehumidifier instead. Our guide to the best dehumidifiers for small UK homes covers that problem.

Runtime is the column that decides whether a humidifier fits your night. Anything under about eight hours will run dry before morning on anything but a low setting. And the guarantees point the opposite way to the prices, which is worth weighing against what owners report about how each one holds up.

Before you buy: three things that matter more than the model

Aim for 40 to 60 percent humidity, not higher. Past about 60 percent, condensation starts forming on cold windows and walls, which is how a dry-air problem becomes a damp problem. A humidifier with a built-in humidistat, or a cheap standalone hygrometer, stops you overshooting. A hygrometer is also the only way to know whether your air is actually dry in the first place, so it is worth buying before the humidifier rather than after. The TempPro TP49 comes as a pack of three with batteries, shows a simple dry, comfortable or wet indicator alongside the reading, and sits on a stand, a magnet or a wall hook, so one can go in each room you are unsure about.

See the TempPro TP49 hygrometer (formerly ThermoPro), pack of three

Clean it properly and often. Standing water grows bacteria, and an ultrasonic humidifier will happily turn that into mist. Empty the tank rather than topping it up, and clean it weekly. Ease of cleaning is a real buying criterion, not a nice extra.

Hard water leaves white dust, unless the humidifier is evaporative. Three of the four here are ultrasonic, which means the minerals in tap water end up as a fine white film on nearby furniture. Dreo specifically recommends purified water in London and the South East. An evaporative humidifier works differently: it passes air over a wet wick, so the water evaporates and the minerals stay behind in the wick. If you live in a hard water area, the Philips below avoids the problem altogether.

What it costs to run

17W to 25W for 8 hours costs about 3.6p to 5.3p.

Based on 26.32p per kWh. Ofgem price cap for Great Britain, 1 October to 31 December 2026. Checked September 2026.

Ultrasonic humidifiers use very little power. Running cost is not a reason to choose between these four.

1

Levoit Classic 160 Cool Mist Humidifier

Best for: Bedrooms and nurseries
Our verdict

The one to buy for a bedroom. Quiet, simple, and easy to keep clean, which matters more than any feature.

Buy it if…
  • It is for a bedroom or nursery
  • You want the quietest option
  • You would rather clean something easily than control it from an app
Skip it if…
  • You want it to stop at a set humidity
  • You want app or voice control
  • The room is large
What stands out
  • 25 dB with the light fully off, quiet enough for a nursery
  • Top fill through a 16 cm opening, so there is no tank to turn upside down
  • Runs up to 25 hours on low, so a full night without refilling
  • A 360 degree nozzle and a single knob for mist output
  • A cleaning brush is included, and the wide opening makes the inside reachable
  • A very large owner review base
Drawbacks
  • Owners split on cleaning, with some finding it easy and others needing to clean it often to keep it working well
  • No humidistat, so nothing stops it pushing the room above 60 percent
  • No app or scheduling

The wide top opening is the feature that matters over a winter. A humidifier that is awkward to clean gets cleaned less, and a humidifier that gets cleaned less is the one that ends up misting bacteria into a bedroom. Being able to get a hand and a brush inside is worth more than any extra setting.

The lack of a humidistat is the thing to manage. Without one, it keeps adding moisture regardless of how humid the room already is. A cheap hygrometer on the bedside table tells you when to turn it down, and is worth buying alongside it.

2

Dreo 4L Smart Humidifier

Best for: Larger rooms, set and forget
Our verdict

The best choice if you want to set a humidity level and forget about it, bought with the durability reports in mind.

Buy it if…
  • You want it to hold a set humidity on its own
  • The room is larger than a bedroom
  • You use Alexa or Google already
Skip it if…
  • You want the most dependable option here
  • You do not want to use an app
  • You would not buy the hard water cartridge
What stands out
  • A built-in humidistat, so it stops adding moisture once the room reaches your target
  • The largest tank here, running up to 32 hours
  • App and voice control through Alexa or Google
  • Top fill, with a modular build that comes apart for cleaning
  • An aroma pad for essential oils, kept separate from the water tank
  • Owners single out the sleep mode as making a real difference overnight
Drawbacks
  • Owner reports on durability are genuinely split, with some units failing within a month
  • The listing quotes both 32 and 36 hours of runtime
  • The demineralisation cartridge for hard water is sold separately
  • No guarantee length stated on the listing

The humidistat is the reason to pay more for this one. It solves the main risk of owning a humidifier, which is overshooting into condensation, by stopping when the room reaches the level you set. The Levoit and the raydrop cannot do that at all, and of the four here only this and the Philips can.

The durability split is the reason to go in carefully. Plenty of owners report it running through the night without trouble for a long time, and others report failures within a month. Keep the paperwork, and pay attention in the first few weeks while a return is still simple.

3

raydrop 1.7L Cool Mist Humidifier

Best for: A bedside table on a budget
Our verdict

A sensible cheap humidifier for one small bedroom, and the five year warranty covers the one thing owners worry about.

Buy it if…
  • The space is a bedside table or a desk
  • You want the lowest spend
  • You would use the warranty if it cracked
Skip it if…
  • You want it to run all night on a high setting
  • Quiet matters above everything
  • The room is larger than a small bedroom
What stands out
  • A five year warranty, the longest in this guide by a distance
  • A narrow oval shape that fits a bedside table or desk
  • Auto shut-off when the water runs out or the tank is lifted
  • Owners praise the mist output for the price
  • A very large owner review base for a budget humidifier
Drawbacks
  • Up to 9 hours of runtime, which only just covers a night
  • Several owners report the plastic cracking and leaking over time
  • 32 dB, louder than the Levoit and Dreo
  • The smallest tank here
Key specifications
Tank
1.7 litres

Safety

The five year warranty changes how to read the cracking reports. Plastic failing over time is a real pattern in the feedback, and at this price you would normally just accept it. Here, the manufacturer is covering it for five years, longer than the Levoit or the Dreo.

Nine hours is the practical limit to plan around. On a lower mist setting it will see you through a night. On high it may run dry before morning and shut itself off, which is safe but leaves the room drying out again by dawn.

4

Philips Evaporative Humidifier 2000 Series HU2716/10

Best for: Hard water areas
Our verdict

The right choice in a hard water area, or for anyone nervous about overshooting humidity. It solves the two problems ultrasonic humidifiers create.

Buy it if…
  • You live in a hard water area
  • You want the lowest risk of condensation
  • You would rather not dust furniture every few days
Skip it if…
  • Quiet is the priority
  • You want the lowest running cost including filters
  • Budget is the deciding factor
What stands out
  • Evaporative, so there is no white mineral dust, whatever your water
  • A humidity controller as well as evaporative operation, so it is the hardest humidifier here to overshoot with
  • Rated for rooms up to 32 m², the largest here
  • Philips says its NanoCloud system spreads up to 99.97 percent less bacteria
  • Up to 15 hours from a 2 litre tank, at the same 17 W as the Levoit
Drawbacks
  • The wick needs replacing periodically, and the listing states spare parts are available for only one year, so check the replacement is still sold before buying
  • At 33 dB it is louder than the Levoit and Dreo
  • A smaller owner review base than the other three
  • Costs considerably more than any other humidifier here

Evaporative humidifiers regulate themselves in a way ultrasonic ones cannot. An ultrasonic model turns water into mist at the same rate however damp the room already is. An evaporative one relies on air drawing moisture off a wet wick, and the moister the air, the slower that happens. This one adds a humidity controller on top, so it has two separate safeguards against the most common mistake with a humidifier.

The wick is the cost to factor in. It traps the minerals that would otherwise become white dust, which is the whole point, but it needs replacing on a schedule. The listing states spare parts are available for one year, which is short for a part you will need every season. Check the replacement wick is sold in the UK, and what it costs, before buying the humidifier.

Which humidifier should you buy?

For a bedroom or nursery, buy the Levoit Classic 160. It is the quietest here, it runs all night, and it is the easiest to keep clean. Add a cheap hygrometer so you know when to turn it down.

For a larger room, or if you want to set a humidity level and leave it with app control, the Dreo 4L does that. For a bedside table on a budget, the raydrop does the job and carries the longest warranty. And in a hard water area, or if overshooting into condensation worries you, the Philips 2000 Series is the safest choice here, and the only one that will not leave white dust.

Humidifier buying guide: your questions answered

Do I need a humidifier or a dehumidifier?

It depends which problem you have, because they do opposite jobs. A humidifier adds moisture to air that has become too dry, usually from central heating in winter, which shows up as a dry throat, tight skin or static. A dehumidifier removes moisture and is the answer to condensation, damp, mould and slow-drying washing. If you have any sign of damp in the house, a humidifier will make it worse. A cheap hygrometer settles the question: below about 40 percent, the air is dry; above about 60 percent, it is damp.

What humidity should I aim for?

Somewhere between 40 and 60 percent suits most UK homes. Below that, air feels dry and uncomfortable. Above about 60 percent, condensation starts forming on cold windows and walls, which can lead to mould. A humidifier with a built-in humidistat, like the Dreo in this guide, stops once it reaches your target. For models without one, a standalone hygrometer tells you when to turn it down.

How often should I clean a humidifier?

Empty and rinse the tank daily rather than topping it up, and give it a proper clean at least once a week. Standing water grows bacteria, and an ultrasonic humidifier will turn whatever is in the tank into mist. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, and avoid putting essential oils directly in the tank unless the model is designed for it. How easy a humidifier is to clean is one of the most important things to check before buying.

Why is my humidifier leaving white dust?

That is minerals from hard tap water. Ultrasonic humidifiers break water into a fine mist, and the calcium and magnesium in it settle as white dust on nearby surfaces. It is most noticeable in hard water areas such as London and the South East. Using filtered or distilled water stops it, and some models accept a demineralisation cartridge that reduces it. An evaporative humidifier avoids it altogether, because the minerals stay behind in the wick rather than going into the air.

Is it safe to use a humidifier in a baby's room?

A cool mist humidifier is generally the safer choice for a nursery, since there is no hot water or steam. Keep it out of reach, clean it frequently, and keep the room below about 60 percent humidity so it does not become damp. Quiet operation matters too: the Levoit in this guide runs at 25 dB with its light off. If your baby has a medical condition affecting breathing, ask your health visitor or GP before using one.

Are humidifiers expensive to run?

Cool mist models are not. The ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers in this guide draw between 17 and 25 W, roughly 4p to 5p for eight hours at the October 2026 price cap rate of 26.32p per kWh. Warm mist is different, because heating the water takes far more power: the Dreo HM713S draws up to 280 W on warm mist, about 59p for eight hours. The other ongoing costs are consumables, such as demineralisation cartridges in hard water areas.
